Creating Engineering Content in Course Management Systems

Many ES21C courses have students prepare for class by taking formative quizzes using a web-based Course Management System (CMS).  The quiz guides students to important concepts from the text or other readings and ensures they have the background to participate in the classroom.

Most CMS’s are not designed to support science or engineering courses and have limited mathematical functionality.  To add more mathematical functionality ES21C has created an interface between Matlab®, a common mathematical modeling tool, and Respondus®, a tool used to create quizzes for many common CMS’s.  This interface allows instructors to create questions that take advantage of the full set of mathematical functions available in Matlab yet can be offered in a campus’ CMS.

This link connects to a .zip file with the Matlab functions, example files, and a short training video.  You will need to have a copy of Matlab® and Respondus® or other software that can translate a text file to a CMS content package.  The software is offered “as-is” but requests for additions or improvements will be considered.

ES21C, OSU, or NSF in no way endorse either Matlab® or Respondus®.

This software is distributed under a Creative Commons license that allows you to copy, use, and modify the software as long as you share with others under these same conditions.   Commercial use is strictly prohibited without express permission from Dr. Cheville.
