The third phase of this project starts in the fourth, no-cost extension year to plan how to most effectively expand the program. Faculty will meet with administrators and the external review board to develop a vision for undergraduate and/or graduate education at OSU that mesh with institutional goals and available resources. Specific areas that may be most effective for expansion are combining laboratory resources into a single web-based catalog (sections 2.2, 3.1) that would be common to the entire engineering college. Student laboratory facilities would then be integrated across departments, strengthening interactions between engineering disciplines.

This phase will also seek to build on this effort by seeking additional support. Funds for wide-spread dissemination will be sought through the Creating Learning Material and Teaching Strategies component of the CCLI program. Faculty involved with this project (Bryant, Cheville) plan to use the educational materials and facilities developed to create training opportunities for K-12 teachers. During the third phase, PI's will submit a Research Experience for Teachers site proposal to more fully utilize facilities during summer months when most student laboratories are idle. The facilities and modules developed will be used in OSU's science teacher certification program, run by Dr. Bryant. There is a critical shortage of science teachers in Oklahoma, only one new high school physics teacher was certified last year. If this project succeeds at recruiting and developing graduate students and at outreach to K-12 teachers, the PI's plan to seek support from the Graduate Teaching Fellows in K-12 Education program. This program creates resources that allow PI's across the university to ensure the broader impact of their research. In this phase faculty will promote this project to the vice president for research, and help faculty writing research proposal develop way to incorporate their research results in undergraduate courses, and create and disseminate curricular materials based on research.
